Phenobio™ technology protects natural resources

Posted by Bianca McCarthy, Ph.D. on 09/30/2021

For too long, using natural resources has meant depleting and, in some instances, even exhausting those resources.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Lubrizol Life Science – Beauty develops and adopts new technologies that work with minimal impact on the environment. Among these processes is a unique method of extraction, Phenobio™ subcritical water technology, which allows for the extraction of botanical biomass with far less environmental impact than conventional methods.

This technology uses only water and is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional methods, which can use hazardous organic solvents. It works by manipulating water temperature and pressure in such a way that the water effectively acts as different solvents, eliminating the need for added chemicals.

Not only is Phenobio™ subcritical water technology faster and more environmentally responsible than conventional methods, it also helps to recover a broader range of phytoactives, including poorly water-soluble compounds. Now, with 360˚ characterization, we have been able to identify the unique bioactive profiles of extracts created with Phenobio™ subcritical water technology.

This green process is why Lubrizol acquired Laboratorie Phenobio in 2019. Since the acquisition, LLS Beauty has used Phenobio™ subcritical water technology in the creation of multiple skincare ingredients, such as: Stevisse™ advanced botanical ingredient, made from organic stevia plants sourced near the company in Bordeaux; and Oxylance™ advanced botanical ingredient, made with a botanical sourced from the Chinese plateau. There is also a range of Actismart™ SW extracts derived from upcycling materials from the food, paper, and spice industries.

Adopting environmentally responsible technology and preserving natural resources are part of LLS Beauty’s commitment to sustainability. To learn more about our sustainability actions, click here.
