A Sustainable Silicone Alternative for Skin and Sun Care Products

Posted by Carolina Ferrarezi Da Fonseca on 06/01/2023

Clean and sustainable beauty products are more readily available than ever, thanks in part to shifting consumer preferences. Consumers are looking for products with clean ingredients that are sustainably sourced and that deliver on the promises of skin care beauty brands, whether preventing the signs of aging or ensuring that the skin is clean and maintains a smooth and youthful appearance.

Silicones have been a part of the beauty industry for decades. They make skin and sun care products easy to apply and fast-spreading while leaving a dry afterfeel. But, as increased awareness and demand grows for clean beauty products, conventional silicones are being replaced in skin and sun care applications with sustainable alternatives. Certain types of volatile silicones (like D5) are regulated in the EU for their negative environmental impact (they are not biodegradable), with more restrictions or bans expected in other countries.

Our SilSense™ Bio 5 emollient is a sustainable silicone alternative to D5 cyclopentasiloxane. This 100% plant-based ingredient is GMO-free, COSMOS approved, vegan suitable, Halal and Kosher compliant, and readily biodegradable.

SilSense™ Bio 5 emollient gives skin and sun care formulations a light sensory, non-sticky feeling and dry afterfeel. Like conventional silicones, it is fast-spreading and leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft. In makeup formulations, it provides good pigment dispersion and fluidity over time. In addition, SilSense™ Bio 5 emollient shows makeup transfer-resistance benefits and improves product shelf life due to a lower evaporation rate than isododecane.

We continue to lead the industry in developing clean, sustainable ingredients. To learn more about SilSense™ Bio 5 emollient, visit our website.
