In our own operations, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint using the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. By not producing waste in the first place, Lubrizol saves money. Plus, waste that's never generated doesn't require treatment or disposal.
We adhere to the highest environmental performance standards, including the American Chemistry Council’s global Responsible Care® initiative. ACC created the Responsible Care Management System (RCMS), which requires third-party certification of our Health, Safety, Environmental and Security (HSES) management systems across all business activities. We’ve established processes throughout our facilities to collect accurate data and analyze our success year over year. The Lubrizol Corporation is certified to the RC14001 management system standard.
Active community support began with our founders. We continue their work by providing dollars, materials and people to various educational, cultural and charitable organizations wherever we do business around the world. In the United States, this includes steadfast support for United Way and The Lubrizol Foundation (which was established in 1952). Around the world, this includes many charitable outreach efforts where employees apply their individual skills as they assist local organizations. Our employees volunteer thousands of hours of service globally, and give their time, talent and donations to worthy causes in the places where we live and work.
Beyond charitable giving, we also support and encourage open dialogue with our neighbors, public health, safety and environmental professionals, educators, elected officials and other stakeholders to address concerns, report progress, create understanding and build partnerships for the common good.

We have embarked on a Journey to Zero: zero error/zero harm and are focused on risk identification and management, front-line supervisor training and employee engagement. We continue to develop our safety culture of accountability and commitment through our global safety awareness program (Make Safe Happen) and are striving toward a safety culture transformation that links to the overarching culture of accountability being driven through the organization. This program calls on every employee to be a safety leader and take accountability – We say, “If you see something, do something about it.” We believe safety doesn’t just happen on its own. We must make it happen.
We are committed to strong corporate governance and ethical behavior in all aspects of our business, and we expect our partners and suppliers to uphold the same moral standards. We are upfront and transparent about our expectations for employees and suppliers. The Lubrizol Code of Ethics applies to all employees. It is a detailed document covering honesty and integrity in business, use of technology, minimizing environmental impact, respecting the intellectual property rights of others, avoiding conflicts of interest, promoting fair competition, gathering and using competitive intelligence, and complying with trade regulations, among other topics. Importantly, due to the global nature of our business, the Code of Ethics is published in 11 languages. Employees who fail to comply are subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
We share the Lubrizol Supplier Code of Conduct and our legal and ethical guidelines with new suppliers and annually with existing suppliers. We take steps to ensure that we are establishing relationships with companies that share our commitment to the highest ethical standards, which reduces risk for our customers and ourselves. For example, the Lubrizol Supplier Code of Conduct specifically addresses rules and restrictions around gifts and entertainment, conflicts of interest, health and safety, employment practices, compliance with competition laws, bribes/kickbacks, financial transactions, and conflict minerals.
