Fun, Bold Hair Colors... and the Products that Maintain Hair Color Vibrancy

Flip through the latest fashion magazine or scroll through the Instagram feeds of your favorite celeb hair stylists and you’ll find fun, bold hair color taking center stage. Whether it’s purple highlights, all-over mauve or the more traditional platinum blond, hair color is trending toward out-of-the-box color.

Refinery29 recently reported that the biggest hair color trend for 2019 will be going red; InStyle magazine has been talking about wild hair colors; and celebrity colorist Guy Tang was quoted in the Hong Kong Tattler as saying hair color is moving to “naked, blush tones and flesh-like colours: think beige, mauve and blush, with a powder-like finish.”

Adding color of any kind can be fun but, particularly with bolder colors, extra TLC is needed to keep color vibrant and healthy looking while avoiding the expense of frequent salon visits. Red, pink, blue and green are the smallest color molecules and leach out of the hair cortex fastest. As a result, consumers will be looking for products to minimize how quickly their color fades. Some of these products include:

  • Dry Shampoos – Lubrizol Personal Care has done two extensive studies on color protection that have shown water is THE biggest culprit to color leaching. To minimize hair’s exposure to water and prolong bold color, consumers will be turning to dry shampoos. The Global Dry Shampoo Market – Growth, Trends, and Forecast, estimates a 6.25 percent market growth between 2018-2023.

  • Extra Gentle and Moisturizing Shampoos and Conditioners – Sulfate-based hair products also contribute to hair color fading. Extra gentle products incorporating functional ingredients that prevent color from leaching out are essential in shampoos and conditioners. For example, two very effective polymers in color protection are our Merquat™ 2003PR and Merquat™ 2001 polymers that both contain the monomer MAPTAC, which is a long pendant nitrogen monomer that has the ability to loop around the hair.

  • Purple-Toning Shampoos – Designed to keep light hair from turning orange and brassy, purple-toning shampoos are crucial for those with bleach-blond hair. These shampoos are used in place of other shampoos two to three times a week and also help prevent brassiness in gray and white hair.

  • Specialized Conditioning Treatments – Whether an oil, cream or mousse, specialized conditioning treatments used a few times a week provide an extra layer of protection to hair. They help the cuticle of each strand lay down completely, which is when it reflects the most light, creating a high shine, vibrant, healthy look.
