The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) newest update to their Heavy-Duty Engine Oil sequences – ACEA 2024 – arrived in December 2024 after being announced in October. The new standards cover a wide range of fuel types and represent a continued push for high performance, improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

Timing

ACEA 2024 becomes mandatory for all new performance claims made after October 1, 2025. Oil marketers may still make claims against ACEA 2022 edition of the oil sequences, the most recent update, until May 1, 2026.

Introducing F01

A new engine oil sequence, F01, has been introduced with the new ACEA HDEO sequences in response to the need for high-temperature performance and shear stability when biodiesel blends are used. This new sequence brings ACEA into closer alignment with the API Categories, closely mirroring API FA-4. F01 varies from the ACEA E11 sequence only in viscosity. F01 requires SAE XW-30 grade oils at reduced high temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity, typically between 2.9cP-3.2cP.

E4, E7, E8, E11 Requirements, Test Methods Unchanged

The 2024 update is not as extensive as ACEA 2022, which introduced E8 in the low Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur (SAPS) categories and E11 to replace E9. ACEA 2022 also delivered new lab and engine tests and categories focused on enhanced oxidation, piston cleanliness and aeration performance. No new test methods or requirements have been added for these sequences.
