Beyond Compliance in Sustainability and People’s Safety

Lubrizol's plant at Clifton, NJ, has a persistent track record when it comes to initiatives to protect our environment and the safety and health of Lubrizol’s employees.

The site was already recognized in 2010 with the Environmental Stewardship Initiative Recognition from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for water use conservation, materials conservation, and the implementation of an environmental management system (RCMS ). A certificate was awarded to the Clifton plant as part of the New Jersey DEP's Environmental Stewardship program that recognizes Lubrizol "for its voluntary and proactive measures taken to go beyond compliance in an effort to improve the environment and ensure a sustainable future".  The plant received as well the Excellence Award from Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (the plant's POTW ) for exceptional compliance with reporting and pretreatment requirement for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Some impressive key performance indicators at Clifton include the reduction of water consumption by 40% in the period 2005 to 2010, the reduction of non-hazardous waste by 15% from 2005 to 2010, and reporting zero environmental releases since 2004. The site has also reduced greenhouse gas emissions through the conversion of Clifton's steam boilers from fuel oil to more efficient natural gas.

With worker's safety also in mind, Clifton has received Lubrizol’s President’s Safety Award for zero recordable incidents for 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013, as well as the Lubrizol’s CEO Safety Award during 2009 for sustainable health, safety, and environmental excellence.
