Aqueous Dispersants

Aqueous dispersants enable the production of highly loaded, highly stable and broadly compatible dispersions for a variety of particles in applications like aqueous coatings, paints and primers, and conventional and digital aqueous inks. High performance aqueous dispersants, including dispersants for zero or low VOC, contain polymeric stabilizing chains selected for solubility in an aqueous medium together with a variety of humectants, coalescing aids and co-solvents. In water-based dispersant systems, the pH and presence or absence of a grind resin is critical to product selection—in addition to the nature of the particle surface.

Lubrizol has a broad portfolio of water-based dispersants that provide excellent compatibility with a wide range of resins and other formulation components—and we work directly with customers to modify our chemistries to meet their unique needs. We also continue to develop innovative new dispersant technologies to meet evolving industry standards and customer requirements. Our aqueous dispersants for organic, inorganic and carbon black pigments and fillers have anchor groups that are optimized for strong adsorption to these particles.

Solsperse™ Hyperdispersantsare designed to provide a wide range of benefits to meet needs of the water-based market. They offer the combination of wetting, dispersing and anti-settling benefits, as well as major process and formulation advantages. These advantages include ease of use; increased milling and dispersion efficiency; higher solids loading dispersions; compatibility with a broad range of pigments, resins, co-solvents and other formulation components; particle size reduction; reduced viscosities; improved coloristics; cost reductions; and, low VOC.

Typical Applications

For paints and coatings, Lubrizol water-borne dispersants are typically used in automotive and transportation, general industrial, decorative and architectural, coil coatings, protective coatings, and wood coatings to deliver a wide range of performance properties, such as rheological and aesthetic benefits and to meet stringent environmental and regulatory requirements. For printing and packaging applications, our aqueous dispersants are utilized in segments such as digital, flexo, gravure and security inks to deliver rheological and
