The physical separator (barrier) between the conditioned (interior) and the unconditioned (exterior) environment of a building is referred to as the building envelope. All commercial and residential buildings have a building envelope, which is designed to resist air, water, heat, light and noise transfer. If water does get in, the building envelope also has to allow for a way to dry out.
Polymers and performance additives play an important role in creating an effective building envelope and reducing the amount of energy required to heat, cool and ventilate a building.
High performing buildings requires high performing coating technologies for building envelope. Lubrizol offers a portfolio of building envelope technologies that include advanced polymers and additives to meet even the most stringent building envelope requirements in three primary areas of the building envelope: low-slope roofing, air-barriers and waterproofing wall coatings.
Low-slope commercial roofs provide a waterproofing barrier that protects the building structure and its contents, as well as a reflective surface to reduce energy consumption. Roof coatings are typically a water-borne liquid that provides a monolithic waterproofing membrane. Beyond the potential to reduce energy consumption, roof coatings can help with sustainability by eliminating the need for roof tear offs, which are the second leading commercial contributor to landfills. Lubrizol offers a number of advanced polymers that allow for flexibility in formulating tough, durable roof coatings.
Air-barriers prevent unwanted air infiltration and exfiltration in above grade wall cavities. They should be continuous over the entire envelope, sealing gaps around penetrations, wall-to-roof joints and wall-to-foundation joints. There are a variety of air-barrier types, such as self-adhered sheet membranes, mechanically fastened commercial building wrap, boardstock, fluid-applied membranes and more.
Lubrizol has developed two experimental fluid-applied air and vapor barrier coatings—an elastomeric terpolymer emulsion and a high solids acrylic emulsion that offers excellent adhesion to a variety of building materials. Both coatings deliver the performance needed to meet the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) requirements in formulations designed for application as a liquid applied air-barrier. The coatings also meet multiple ASTM standards to enable the air-barrier to meet AAMA standards.
Wall coatings act as a physical separator (outside/inside) and a weather barrier. Lubrizol offers several acrylic emulsions to formulate high-performance wall coatings to deliver superior protection and reduce lifetime maintenance costs for a variety of construction materials.
Lubrizol also offers a couple performance additives that are perfect for commercial building envelope coatings. These include Solsperse® W100 Hyperdispersant for improved coating hydrophobicity and technology for fast-dry for faster between-coat drying and early moisture/wash-off resistance.
With an extensive line of high-performing coatings and extensive experience in the market, Lubrizol has the products and knowledge to help formulators develop superior building envelope coatings.
