Understanding Chemical Incompatibility

To ease the burden associated with researching and selecting accompanying construction products, Lubrizol Advanced Materials developed the FBC™ System Compatible Program. This resource is made available to manufacturers of ancillary products to assist in determining their product's chemical compatibility with Lubrizol's

To qualify for inclusion in the FBC System Compatible Program, the manufacturer of auxiliary construction products must agree to:

  1. Submit their products for testing by a third-party lab.
  2. Not alter the tested formulation.
  3. Have their manufacturing facility audited annually by the third-party lab.

The FBC System Compatible Program serves the industry with active use in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, 25 European countries, the United Arab Emirates, India and China. (Footnote: Users should be aware that other standards exist or are being developed to serve the industry, such as FM 1635, Approval Standard for Plastic Pipe and Fittings for Automatic Sprinkler Systems.)

While consulting directly with the manufacturer of the ancillary products is always a good practice, the FBC System Compatible Program assists in the effort to eliminate guesswork associated with identifying chemical compatibility. Products accepted into the program are given the right to display this FBC System Compatible mark on their labels. Once this mark has been applied, it demonstrates the ancillary product manufacturer's commitment not to make changes to the formulation of the product without advance written notice and retesting.

It is important to note, however, that not all CPVC products are identical. Different CPVC products may vary in molecular weight, chlorine content and compound additives. As a consequence of these variables, the FBC System Compatible Program can only help determine chemical compatibility with the aforementioned Lubrizol Advanced Materials' brands.

The FBC™ System Compatible Program is a resource made available to manufacturers of ancillary products intended to be used with CPVC to help determine whether a product is chemically compatible with Lubrizol Advanced Materials' FlowGuard®, BlazeMaster®, Corzan®, and products made with TempRite® Technology. Other manufacturers and/or brands of CPVC piping have not been tested as part of the FBC™ System Compatible Program. The FBC™ System Compatible program is, therefore, only applicable to the chemical compatibility of ancillary products with the Lubrizol Advanced Materials brands of FlowGuard®, BlazeMaster®, Corzan®, and products made with TempRite® Technology. This distinction is made because every brand of CPVC piping is made with unique compounds, some of which may contain resins with different molecular weights and varying chlorine content. These characteristics directly impact the performance of the resulting product. Similarly, various CPVC products contain different performance additives. This too affects the performance characteristics of the ancillary product. For these reasons, Lubrizol Advanced Materials has no responsibility for any failures occurring as a result of using products in the FBC™ System Compatible Program with CPVC products other than FlowGuard®, BlazeMaster®, Corzan®, and products made with TempRite® Technology.
