Bioadhesive Formulations

APPLICATION USAGE

Carbopol^® polymers, Pemulen^™ polymeric emulsifiers and Noveon^® polycarbophils are the industry standard bioadhesive delivery systems to various mucous membranes. Due to their chemical nature, these high molecular weight polymers readily swell in body fluids, providing a large adhesive surface for maximum contact with the mucous layer. The polymers have been shown to increase drug bioavailability due to the lengthened period of time in which the drug is in contact with the absorbing tissue. Additionally, Carbopol polymers can improve the stability of some drugs by protecting them from enzyme degradation prior to the drug being absorbed by the body.
