TPU are making inroads into the medical field where new processing methods allow it to be used in a number of life-saving devices. This move into the medical field is being further advanced through the experience and reputation of Thermedics™ Polymer Products, which were incorporated into the Estane® Engineered Polymers area in 2003.

The commercial introduction of Tecoflex® TPU for aliphatics in 1983 helped position Thermedics Polymer Products as one of the leading suppliers to the medical device industry with an outstanding array of TPU products. 

Lubrizol operates a complete resin and tubing production facility at our Wilmington, MA, USA facility which conforms to specifications of Good Manufacturing Practices and specially designs to extrude our own polyurethane resins.  All tubing passes strict quality control criteria at each stage of production and conforms to specifications of Good Manufacturing Practices and ISO 9001-2000 Certified.  All tubing extruded at Thermedics is produced on a custom order basis to ensure exact dimensions and configuration.

lumen-shapesThe excellent working characteristics of Thermedics Polymer Products will allow extremely small diameters and very complex lumen configurations to be extruded.  Specialty operations such as radiopaque stripe co-extrusions, tubing requiring specific radiopaque loadings or exact color matching is also done on a regular basis, allowing manufacturers to order tubing that meets their desired specifications.  

The expert extrusion engineers at Lubrizol have developed capabilities to extrude tubing with lumen diameters as small as .005 inches with as many as 9 lumens.  Orders for complex tubing with 4 to 6 lumens are not uncommon.  Lubrizol’s technical staff work with clients to assure all tubing meets exacting dimension, durometer, and strength tolerances for its function within the medical device.
