Estane® Engineered Polymers

Optical Urethanes

Unique Estane® Engineered Polymer formulations deliver low haze and excellent light transmission in a variety of flat, bent, and/or spherical security transparencies and specialty laminations. Interlayers made from our films are specifically developed for use in optical laminations of glass, polycarbonate, acrylic, cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), PET, or combinations thereof.

These engineered polymers typically serve as “thermoplastic adhesives” and are laminated to materials such as glass or PC using heat (100°C) and pressure (60 psi to 300 psi). Estane polyether - based polymer grades are specifically designed for autoclaving. They do not contain impurities like polyesters and as a result do not create crazing in polycarbonate. In addition, polyethers are an effective replacement for PVB, a plasticizer-containing material which also causes crazing in polycarbonate laminations.

Estane AG TPU formulations are non-yellowing and UV performance is achieved via a UV stabilization package. They offer optimum performance at the working temperature of the laminate itself, typically -40°C to 50°C. Most laminations utilize 80 Shore A hardness while softer grades are used to impart better low-temperature performance and alleviate stress in asymmetrical laminations.

The workhorse grade, Estane AG8451 TPU, offers low haze, excellent light transmission, and low yellowing. Typical applications include glass or glass/PC laminations for delayed-entry windows in prisons, stores, banks, and kiosks. Other uses include aircraft windows and high-end ballistic glazing (level 8 performances).
