Over Molding
Overmolding automates the assembly of individual components. Originally stemming from lean manufacturing efforts, this technique allows the designer or engineer broader freedom in creative design and potential assembled part cost-savings. Soft Touch is a soft flexible overmolding material molded over a more rigid substrate, combining ergonomics and performance to the product. There are two major categories typically considered for the overmolding process: Insert molding process involves one or more of the sub-components (plastic or metal) being placed in the mold (by hand or automatically) and a molten polymer is then injected into the same cavity forming the component. Multi-shot molding requires the use of multiple injection units, each independently injecting the desired plastic material into a more complex mold design forming the multi-component assembly. One of the most critical factors necessary to obtain a successful overmolded part is the bond between the sub-components. This is either achieved via chemical adhesion between compatible plastics or mechanical interference/interlocking means. Insert molding allows the use of a chemical adhesive to be applied to the inserted sub-component(s) prior to molding, if required, for enhanced adhesion. Key end-use markets include:
