Monroe Plumbing, located in Chagrin Falls (near Cleveland), Ohio, has been a long-time supporter of CPVC plumbing systems. Founded in 1986, the company has relied on one brand—FlowGuard Gold® pipe and fittings—for all of its CPVC installations since it first starting using CPVC in the mid 1990s. Today, FlowGuard Gold CPVC pipe and fittings represents the largest percentage of Monroe’s residential installations.
“I believe any plastic system is better than copper because it’s a more appropriate material for transporting water and avoiding the problems of corrosion,” said Tim Randles, operations manager for Monroe. “But when it comes down to choices, I prefer CPVC over PEX because of its straight, professional appearance. Since PEX has a spaghetti-like appearance, it requires too much time to make it look good.”
Despite the company’s preference for CPVC and the product’s more than 50-year track record, Randles indicated there are still some customers who like the idea of having a metallic plumbing system. So when Randles was approached by a local homeowner about the idea of using a new metal-reinforced CPVC, he was, to say the least, intrigued. FlowGuard Bendable composite pipe delivers the performance of CPVC along with the confidence in a metallic pipe that the owner desired.
“I was willing to try the new pipe and fittings because of the reputation of the FlowGuard name,” said Randles. “We have relied on the FlowGuard brand for longer than I can remember and our use of it has increased dramatically in recent years. It’s a great product. It’s easy to install, requires few tools for installation, eliminates the need for torches on the jobsite, and is not prone to pinhole leaks even when installed in rural applications where the acidic content of the well water is high.”
The new FlowGuard Bendable composite pipe offers all the benefits of traditional FlowGuard Gold pipe and fittings and more. The bendable aluminum core allows the pipe to be used in coil form or in straight lengths, like it was used on the premier installation in Chagrin Falls.
“I can see a lot of applications for this new product,” continued Randles. It gives us a straight, professional look for the long runs particularly in the basement where homeowners really see the product up close. And it let us bend the piping around corners and obstructions and up through the floor to the tub and shower valves with as few fittings as possible. Yet, it wasn’t sloppy like PEX, actually staying in place where you put it. I can also see this being an ideal product for underslab applications.”
Randles also liked the competitive pricing of FlowGuard Bendable composite pipe which gave it additional high marks over copper. “This product will help us bridge the gap with those customers who still want metal,” said Randles. “We now offer a solution that provides added peace of mind because of the aluminum component but one that isn’t subject to corrosion. We’re excited about being able to offer our customers the best that both CPVC and metal have to offer.”
FlowGuard® Bendable multilayer composite pipe combines the performance benefits of CPVC with the strength and durability of metal to offer the ultimate piping system.
